What made you decide to give CrossFit a try?
I first heard about it in 2012 and saw YouTube videos of women lifting weights, climbing ropes, and doing muscle ups and was in awe!  I never thought something existed between “toning” with light weights and female body builders, CrossFit opened my eyes to a new definition of beauty and strength.  I researched CrossFit gyms and obsessed over the athletes and games but I couldn’t justify the cost and commitment right away.  When we moved to Capitol Hill I bit the bullet and found Foundation, I wish I would have started sooner!

How long have you been with us? What keeps you coming to our gym?
I started Foundations in June 2014, so about 9 months!  I keep coming back because I am never bored and I’m constantly amazed at my own strength (something my chubby 7 year old self would have never imagined).  It’s addictive!  I’ve never been athletic at all, but the WODs force me to go outside my comfort zone, try new things, and work hard. Plus, all the people I’ve met have been super kind and each of the coaches teaches me something different!

What class times to you usually go to?
After Foundations I was a faithful 6 AMer, but with the dark winter and my end of year work schedule I tend to go whenever I can! I always try to hit up the Saturday class too.  Sometimes I take a “mental health day” and come in the middle of the day of the workweek and it’s awesome!

Do you have a favorite CrossFit exercise? Least favorite?
My favorite is probably cleans!  I also like backsquats, kettlebells, and handstand practice. Oh and Fight Gone Bad style workouts are my jam, love to push myself on the final round.  Least favorite is probably snatches, only because it seems really elusive to a newbie!  Also, before doing a 2k row I thought rowing was fun…but I learned better!

What’s your most recent PR?
Since I’m so new, everyday is pretty much a PR :)  This month I’ve gotten a 27kg snatch, 57kg backsquat, and 43kg C&J.  I’m proud of all that improvement but I’ve got my goals set even higher!

Any fun facts about yourself that your gym-mates don’t know about you?
I got really into Shakespeare in high school and have read/seen several plays/films.  Whenever we go to London I insist on seeing a play at the Globe Theatre! It’s an amazing experience :) in this picture I had just snagged some of the last tickets for my favorite play that night, I was in heaven!

What outside-the-gym activities do you like to participate in? How has your performance changed with your increased fitness?
I try to go to yoga class when I can and I have a lot more upper body strength since starting Crossfit.  I’m also really good at carrying a ton of groceries home now ;)

What is your favorite place to have dinner?
It’s  tough to pick just one but Smith, Tacos Chukis, and La Isla are always a good choice!

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
I’ve sacrificed many a good shoe in this Seattle rain so some sort of dry shield for my feet, I HATE stepping in puddles!

As a kid, what was your ideal dream job?
Either a stand-up comedian(?!) or teacher.  Thank god the first one didn’t pan out as all I did was do a terrible Elvis impression and a repertoire of “dad jokes”.

Do you have any siblings?
Yes, my older sister is teaching in Paris at the moment and I’m going to visit her this Spring!  She’s a huge inspiration to me as she finished her Ph.D in French from Cornell last year and is training for a half marathon this year! She’s beauty and brains and strength and determination, she’s my inspiration! (Especially during running WODs when I want to give up!)

Top three favorite movies?
I’ve seen Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Amelie more times than I can count!  And I’ve seen Django Unchained twice and could still watch the 2.5 hours again!

Current favorite song?
Oh I couldn’t pick just one.  I pretty much have the album Singles by Future Island on repeat in my Spotify!  Along with Metronomy, Helado Negro, Django Django, Junip, Twin Shadow… I could go on!  I’ve seen all those artists/ bands play live in Seattle, it’s one of my favorite things about this city, getting to go to live concerts!

  • Are you from Seattle?
    • If not, where are you originally from?
Nope! I grew up in Syracuse, NY and moved to Seattle a year ago after stops in New Hampshire, Washington DC, and San Francisco. I moved here a year ago after my wife (new CFSLU member Meeka – say hi to her!) got a new job.
  • When is your birthday?
    • Cinco de Mayo
  • What do you do for work?
    • I work for Bloom Energy, a fuel cell company based in the San Francisco area. My job there is understanding and explaining how energy markets work.
  • What is your idea of fun?
    • Mostly sports of some kind, but I love to travel as well. I took my first trip to SE Asia in November when Meeka and I went to Myanmar.
  • What made you decide to give CrossFit a try?
    • I stumbled on it accidentally when I took up rock climbing in 2008 and joined a climbing gym that also featured a small affiliate (CrossFit East Bay). I got very excited when I saw tire flipping photos!
  • How long have you been with us? / What keeps you coming to our gym?
    • One year and one month! I love every trainer on the staff and pretty much all of the members too (I think I still haven’t met some of the morning regulars)…I work alone all day, so the gym is a pretty important outlet at the end of the day.

  • Are you from Seattle? If not, where are you originally from?
    • Nope, I grew up in the tiny middle of nowhere town of Walla Walla (actually the suburb College Place: population 7k!).  Needless to say, I was ready to get out!  When college came I went to WSU in Vancouver, WA.  After graduation, I moved to Seattle in 2011.  I love it here though and feel like it’s my new home!
  • When is your birthday?
    • September 4
  • What do you do for work?
    • I’m the Human Resources Business Partner at Optimum Energy.  An HVAC software startup in Pioneer Square.  I handle any and all things HR, which at times is very rewarding and at others, extremely stressful.  I also serve on the Seattle SHRM Board as the College Relations Director.
  • What is your idea of fun?
    • Anything related to food!  Eating it, cooking it, taking pictures of it :)  My boyfriend, Chris, and I have loved exploring the city through its restaurants.  Living in Ballard we got well acquainted with all the restaurants on Ballard Ave, then moving to Capitol Hill helped us discover new favorites.  Working in Pioneer Square is also foodie paradise as it has been the hot spot for new restaurants and bars these past few years! I also spend way too much time on Instagram posting pictures of my food!

  • What made you decide to give CrossFit a try?

  • As a kid, what was your ideal dream job?
I’ve probably wanted to be a writer since I learned to read. It feels pretty amazing for that dream to finally be a reality.
  • Top three favorite tv shows?
I love The Walking Dead. It is definitely my favorite show, even if I have to watch through half-covered eyes because it’s so gory. I also like Game of Thrones and New Girl.
  • What outside-the-gym activities you like to participate in?
I like to hike and camp. The summer before last I camped around the Peninsula and Olympic Mountains with one of my good girl friends. We’d wake early, pack up, hike most of the day, cook dinner, and drink by the fire. A few of my most cherished photos are from that trip. We came home smelling like campfire smoke and the sea – it was awesome.
I frequently hike Rattlesnake Ledge to watch the sun rise. It’s my happy place.
  • What is your favorite band/artist?
I like just about anything except for super heavy metal and Country. I grew up on Oldies, have a major soft spot for 40’s Big Bands and Classical because of my grandparents, and I really connect with artists like M83, Blackmill, and Glitch Mob; I love music without lyrics. On a gym note, it’s my favorite when songs like “I Don’t F**k With You” by Big Sean come on. How do you not want to PR when those play during a WOD??

Kelsi A. (2/3)

Are you from Seattle?
Yes! I might be one of the few at the gym who is a Seattle native. Yet the city has changed so much from the place where I grew up that a lot of the time it doesn’t feel like the same place. The Space Needle is still there, but most everything else feels different!

Do you have a favorite CrossFit exercise? Least favorite?
I think Andrew made it up, but I love Diannie! I practiced my butt off during the Open last year to learn double unders, so whenever they’re in a workout, I get a little excited. Plus I prefer bodyweight-centered WODs… (Crossfit sacrilege!)

Last year’s CGO 14.5 was pretty horrible. I vividly remember wishing it was over after the first round. But at least I finished, and my time wasn’t as bad as I thought! Quite certain I’ll never do it again.

What class time do you usually go to?
Most of the time I go to 5:30 class, though I do enjoy 6am class once a week or so.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
We actually talked about this at work last week in our Friday meeting! I think I may have to steal one of my coworkers’ answers: teleportation. Living in Ballard, working on Capitol Hill, and Crossfitting in SLU results in lots of time on the bus or in the car, so this super power would be pretty great day-to-day. Plus I could be anywhere in the world in a snap. Yes, please!

-What is your idea of fun?
Winning. And anything that involves wine.

-Current favorite song?
Most of you youngins probably don’t know that before there was a Beyoncé, there was the ultimate grand supreme Miss. Diana. Ross. My all-time favorite song will always and forever be “Someday We’ll Be Together”. Second favorite song of all time is “Reflections” by Miss Ross and the Supremes, and then “Nightshift” by the Commodores. I grew up on Motown.
Spotify says in 2014 I listened to this song the most: Samson et Dalila – Acte II “Mon coeur s’ouvre à ta voix comme s’ouvrent les fleurs.” I just listened to it again 5 times in a row! OMG it’s so good. I love opera — La Traviata being my favorite, of course. My favorite song right this second is Beyoncé’s 7/11, of course.

-Favorite place to go out for dinner?
Stateside is my newest favorite place. We ordered 4 things and it was ALL delicious (why is that so rare?). Their crispy chicken with ginger rice — amazing! And then they have a pine nut tart that is so frickin good! My old favorite is Harvest Vine because tapas are everything. And the Polish home, where I can eat my fill of pierogi, kielbasa, and pickle soup. Fatty McFatterstein.

-How long have you been with us? / What keeps you coming to our gym?
April 1 will be the 2-year anniversary of my first real CrossFit class. I keep coming back because I want abs before I die, so I need to get as many workouts in as possible! But really I like the feeling from completing feats of strength. I want to get stronger and have abs. Abs, mostly.

-What class time do you usually go to?
7am if I wake up in time. 8 if I don’t. 6:30pm if I’m hung over.

-Do you have a favorite CrossFit exercise? Least favorite?
Squats are definitely my favorite. It finally gives my bulbous booty a legitimate purpose that I can talk about in public.
I hate muscle ups. I worked so hard to get a few, and now I can’t do them anymore. I HATE THEM!

Meet Teddy B.

-Are you from Seattle? If not, where are you originally from?
I’ve lived in Seattle for over 14 years. I was born in Taiwan, grew up in Chicago, lived in Tokyo for a few years, spent a short time in Fort Lauderdale, my parents are in North Carolina and I went to school there. But I’m from Seattle.
 -When is your birthday?
May 6. I am 28. End of question.
-What do you do for work?
My official title is senior developer and I build websites. But really I just watch the clock all day until I can go to the gym again or drink wine.
-What made you decide to give CrossFit a try?
There were 3 triggers. First I saw a TV commercial for CrossFit and I was like, “Damn, those guys are HOT!” Second, I have a friend who started 2 years before me and I watched her amazing transformation and accomplishments on Facebook. Last, Trainer Bob from The Biggest Loser said it was the best fitness program he’d ever tried, so I was like, if Trainer Bob says so!
-What is your most recent PR?
My #1 goal for 2015 is to get a 182kg 1RM back squat, which is 400 lbs. Last max week I got 160kg, so I’m getting closer!
-Any fun facts about yourself that your gym-mates don’t know about you?
I’m really into mushroom hunting and foraging for other wild foods. I run a small mushroom conference every October at Breitenbush Hot Springs in the Oregon Cascades, last year I organized the annual conference for the North American mushroom association, and I’ve been a board member for the Puget Sound mushroom society for 4 years. This year I plan on getting a dog so I can start hunting for truffles, too. I’m really into it.
I love to gamble. Craps, blackjack, poker, paigow, bingo. My best gambling moment to date happened when I was playing 2 hands at the same time in paigow. One hand had a straight flush and the other hand had a royal flush. $$$ I love to play Settlers of Catan, and was the “mayor” of the West Coast region of the online version of the game for 2 years. I bet you didn’t even know that was a thing! I’ve actually chatted with Klaus Teuber’s son Guido to work out bugs in the online game. NERD ALERT!
I’m pretty sure I will be shot twice and eaten by a shark. Not necessarily in succession.
Some of my life goals:
- To compete in the International Whistlers Convention
- To live in Paris
- To do a frickin handstand

SLU Athlete Spotlight: Kelsi A. (1/3)

Meet Kelsi A.

-What do you do for work?
February is my second month working as the Content Writer at Cody. For the few (or new) FCFSLUers who may not know, Cody is an online fitness app. It’s pretty much like Instagram for fitness, but obviously better. You can post and track your workouts, learn new skills, and be part of a great community. Working here is pretty freaking awesome. I get to write, watch, and talk about fitness all day long. Plus I can walk around in my socks, use the office couch as my desk, and take workout breaks. Kiiind of amazing.

-What made you decide to give CrossFit a try?
I had been going to a regular gym in the mornings before work for about a year and felt like I’d hit a plateau. Though I knew several people who did Crossfit, two of my good friends were regulars at SLU. One day at brunch I asked them to tell me about it. Of course I wasn’t asking because I was interested in joining – Crossfit was way too intimidating, intense, and I wasn’t interested in lifting. However I continued to be a bit bored by the gym and wanted a more social environment where I could work out (no one at the gym talks to each other, especially at 5am), so eventually I cautiously registered for orientation, reluctantly signed up for June 2013 Foundations, and the rest is history! I quit going to the other gym in the mornings almost a year ago because the dual workouts were not sustainable for me and I was having way more fun at SLU with the workout variety, super cool people, and the PRs!

-Speaking of, what’s your most recent PR?
Well last week I was super pissed off after sitting in SLU traffic for over half an hour and missing the start of 5:30 class, so I plugged in my headphones, went to warm up for my CompEx session, and I’m pretty sure I PRd my 500m row at around 1:50. If that doesn’t count, the week prior I definitely PRd my clean, which just happens to be my favorite lift. I finally hit 60kg! And yes, it was a full clean :)

-When is your birthday?
September 16th, and I’ve been told I am very much a Virgo! My last birthday was spent traveling around Spain and Paris with my younger brother, Jeff. We were gone for three weeks and it was the most wonderful experience. I took over 1,000 pictures and have been (slowwwly) writing about our travels on my photo blog. I plan to go somewhere else for my next birthday, and I’m very open to suggestions, so please share some of your favorite places with me!!
